Be it Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), Chillers, or Computer Room Airconditioning (CRAC)<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The Federal Budget announced on the 6th of October that all businesses with turn over&nbsp;less than $5B will be able to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ato.gov.au\/General\/New-legislation\/In-detail\/Direct-taxes\/Income-tax-for-businesses\/JobMaker-Plan---temporary-full-expensing-to-support-investment-and-jobs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fully deduct capital equipment purchases<\/a> in operation by June 2022. If you couple this with the state-based energy savings scheme (ESS, VEU) then a business can substantially reduce their energy costs, and achieve a much shorter payback.&nbsp; With the added bonus of the higher reliability and lower maintenance that comes with new equipment.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Take for example the upgrade of a 250kW UPS with a cost of say $90,000.&nbsp; The aging UPS is currently running at 232 kW input and 194 kW output (83.6% efficiency).&nbsp; New high-quality UPS run at 97% efficiency and hence 200kW input with 32kW saved.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The figures for the new UPS commissioned by June 2022 are as follows<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>New UPS installed purchase price $90,000&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Immediate tax writeoff 30% x $90,000 = $27,000<\/li>\n<li>Compared with tax write off over 10 years = $2,700 PA&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Energy Saving Certificates = $45,000<\/li>\n<li>Capital Costs (after tax writeoff and certificates)\n<ul>\n<li>$90,000 \u2013 $27,000 &#8211; 45,000 = $18,000<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Annual Electricity Savings of 365 x 24 x 32 kW x $0.15 \/ kWh = $42,000<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Compare the three scenarios<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Payback = Capital Costs (after rebates &amp; tax cuts) \/ Annual Savings<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>No tax cuts &amp; not claiming environmental certificates<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Simple payback = $90,000 \/ ($42,000 + $2,700) = 2.0 years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Using tax cuts &amp; not claiming environmental certificates<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Simple payback = ($90,000 \u2013 $27,000) \/ $42,000 = 1.5 years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Using tax cuts &amp; environmental certificates<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Simple payback = ($90,000 \u2013 $27,000 \u2013 $45,000) \/ $42,000 = 5 months<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul><div><b><br><\/b><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Hence by performing the upgrade with the Federal Budget changes (extending the immediate tax write off from $150,000 to unlimited) drastic shortens the payback period and provides a much higher ROI. Also, be aware that with the changes that allow companies to offset future losses against past profits for the financial years of 2020-2022 means that you can&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ato.gov.au\/General\/New-legislation\/In-detail\/Direct-taxes\/Income-tax-for-businesses\/Loss-carry-back\/#:~:text=Eligible%20corporate%20entities%20with%20less,and%202020%E2%80%9321%20financial%20years.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">carry back losses<\/a> (ie the capital cost) to reduce last year\u2019s tax bill as well. UPS are one asset type that uses a large amount of energy and has the potential to save substantial energy, but the same applies to many other equipment upgrades that will drive substantial energy savings.&nbsp; Consider these aging assets for replacement by using the immediate tax depreciation and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wattly.com\/government-schemes\/nsw-energy-saving-scheme-ess\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NSW Energy Saving Scheme<\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wattly.com\/government-schemes\/veet-scheme-victorian-energy-efficiency-target\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Victorian Energy Upgrades<\/a>&nbsp;to drive much short payback periods.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>UPS and CRAC upgrades for Data Centres<\/li>\n<li>Variable Speed Drives for large motors and fans (very fast payback)<\/li>\n<li>Chillers and Condenser upgrades<\/li>\n<li>Hot Isle \/ Cool Isle&nbsp;configurations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>All these assets can claim&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wattly.com\/government-schemes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">energy savings certificates<\/a>&nbsp;and funding towards the upgrade using the Measurement and Verification methods under the different state-based schemes (the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esc.vic.gov.au\/victorian-energy-upgrades-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Victorian Energy Upgrades<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ess.nsw.gov.au\/Home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NSW Energy Saving Scheme<\/a>) as well as under the Australian&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cleanenergyregulator.gov.au\/Infohub\/CFI\/Carbon-Farming-Initiative\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carbon Farming Initiative<\/a> (Climate Solutions Fund).<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Energy efficiency equipment payback drastically reduced.&nbsp;&nbsp; The payback period for Data Centre capital upgrades can be drastically reduced from 3 years to 1 year.
