{"id":23223,"date":"2021-10-25T23:49:23","date_gmt":"2021-10-25T23:49:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/northmoregordon.com\/?p=23223"},"modified":"2021-10-25T23:52:28","modified_gmt":"2021-10-25T23:52:28","slug":"13th-auction-results-cap-a-big-month-for-the-erf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/northmoregordon.com\/news\/13th-auction-results-cap-a-big-month-for-the-erf\/","title":{"rendered":"13th Auction Results Cap a Big Month for the ERF"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Starting with the <a href=\"https:\/\/northmoregordon.com\/news\/record-1000-projects-participating-under-the-erf\/\">1,000<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0project\u00a0registered<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0100 millionth\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/northmoregordon.com\/certificates\/#australian-carbon-credit-units-accus\">Australian Carbon Credit Units<\/a> (ACCUs)\u00a0issued,\u00a0then\u00a0ending\u00a0with the\u00a0announcement\u00a0of the 13<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Emissions Reduction Fund (ERF)\u00a0auction results,\u00a0the last month has brought a string of good news stories for the\u00a0federal government\u2019s direct-action carbon abatement program.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ERF is a $2 billion Abbott-era government fund that purchases carbon abatement twice a year by conducting reverse auctions.&nbsp;At each auction, projects can be awarded ACCU off-take contracts that are either fixed \u2013 where the project must deliver the ACCUs over the contract term; or optional \u2013 where the project can sell their ACCUs to the ERF or choose to sell at a higher price on the spot market.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The average price&nbsp;paid by the Australian Government for&nbsp;ACCUs&nbsp;in the latest auction&nbsp;was&nbsp;$16.94, spread&nbsp;across&nbsp;24 optional delivery contracts,&nbsp;for a total of&nbsp;6.8 million tonnes of CO<sub>2<\/sub>-e abatement.&nbsp;This is the first time that no fixed delivery contacts have been awarded,&nbsp;against the backdrop of climbing ACCU prices in spot market.&nbsp;This suggests that the ERF is moving to a role of providing a floor price&nbsp;to project developers&nbsp;while still allowing them to participate in the&nbsp;growing&nbsp;spot market.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As shown below,&nbsp;this year&nbsp;has seen significant growth in the ACCU market with spot prices&nbsp;diverging from the historic trend of following the auction results.&nbsp;In the past 12&nbsp;months,&nbsp;there has been&nbsp;a 108% growth&nbsp;price&nbsp;to $33.50, $10.40 (65% of&nbsp;the&nbsp;12-month&nbsp;growth)&nbsp;being&nbsp;in the past 6 weeks alone.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/northmoregordon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-1024x630.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/northmoregordon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-1024x630.png 1024w, https:\/\/northmoregordon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-300x185.png 300w, https:\/\/northmoregordon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-768x472.png 768w, https:\/\/northmoregordon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image.png 1164w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In compassion to international&nbsp;markets,&nbsp;ACCUs&nbsp;(AU$33.50)&nbsp;are still trading at discount, per tonne&nbsp;of&nbsp;CO<sub>2<\/sub>-e,&nbsp;compared to&nbsp;European Allowances&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;\u20ac57.93&nbsp; (AU$90.36); and&nbsp;UK Allowances&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;\u00a358.00&nbsp;(AU$106.95);&nbsp;But above&nbsp;the&nbsp;Californian Emission Trading Scheme&nbsp;\u2013 US$23.30 (AU$31.21); and China\u2019s&nbsp;newly&nbsp;launched ETS&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;\u00a541.62&nbsp;(AU$8.73).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also&nbsp;this month, the Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction announced the&nbsp;program&nbsp;development priorities for 2022, which add&nbsp;methods for&nbsp;electric vehicle and hydrogen refuelling infrastructure,&nbsp;use of hydrogen, stacking of&nbsp;different activities on farms,&nbsp;and expansion of the existing carbon capture and savanna fire management methods.&nbsp;This announcement builds on the existing priorities for soil carbon,&nbsp;biomethane, plantation forestry, and blue carbon.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While there&nbsp;have&nbsp;been&nbsp;criticisms&nbsp;of some land-based methods in the past months,&nbsp;ACCUs are&nbsp;recognised as a high-integrity carbon units&nbsp;with a diversity of methods&nbsp;to credit carbon savings.&nbsp;The&nbsp;growing value&nbsp;of ACCUs is increasing interest in projects for industry, particularly in energy efficiency, fuel switching, transport, and alternative waste treatment across a range of sectors.
